Men’s Basketball (5-7 OUA)
Hosting York (6-7 OUA) on Friday, January 21 at Montpetit Hall at 8:00 p.m. (SSN Canada)
Hosting Laurentian (6-7 OUA) on Saturday, January 22 at Montpetit Hall at 8:00 p.m. (SSN Canada)
The Gee-Gees will get set to play five games in eight days starting this Friday as they host York, then Laurentian the following night. The Gee-Gees will follow up this weekend of play with the Capital Hoops Classic against Carleton, before they host two more games next weekend.
“I think our guys are focused. There is a danger with such a big event coming behind so quickly,” said head coach James Derouin in reference to Capital Hoops looming ahead of the Gee-Gees. “We know how big these two games are [this weekend]; being 5-7, we can’t look past any games. We need to focus on this weekend.”
And this weekend’s games will be key though as both York and Laurentian are one win ahead of the Gee-Gees and therefore ahead of them in the standings. And with both teams also facing 12-0, number one nationally Carleton this weekend, the Gee-Gees have a prime opportunity to jump up in the standings this week.
“Our goal of the second semester is trying to move up in the standings [and] finish business in our own division. This weekend is the next step,” explained Derouin, “With the possibility of winning both games, which would put us alone in third [in the OUA East].”
Derouin is optimistic about the next weeks of the season for the team. “It is a new coach, new team, new faces; but the coaching staff and players feel that we’ve reached a rhythm with our team – who will play, where and when. We are in the best position we’ve been in so far and we are most comfortable with the team.”
Looking back over the season so far, Derouin highlighted the performance of four rookies – forward Chris Anderson, Ottawa Ont., guard Johnny Berhanemeskel, Ottawa, Ont., forward Matt Marshall, Burlington, Ont.,and forward Gabriel Gonthier-Dubue, Gatineau, Qué.
“They are four pure rookies,” notes Derouin, “that have all been contributing to our winning. Moving forward, the prospect of our team is a great situation with all four rookies all contributing to our success. They have really turned the rookies corner in their speed of game and athleticism.”
“I’m excited about the future, excited about their prospects and to see how much more they can do – this year and next year,” continued Derouin, “They’re here for the next four years and already contributing; they’ll be that much more ready.”
