The number ten nationally ranked Gee-Gees will be travelling to Waterloo this weekend to take on the University of Waterloo Warriors on Friday night and the undefeated Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday afternoon.
The Gee-Gees finished their opening weekend an even 1-1, after losing their opening game to Brock, but then bouncing back to win against Guelph the following night.
Head coach James Derouin says his team will need to be ready to play. “Waterloo’s always got a good crowd and a good atmosphere. Their coach always runs a ton of really good sets and a well disciplined and dangerous team.”
As for Laurier, Derouin identifies them as a team that has “slowly been getting better, under the radar. They play tough and a good defence; they’re dangerous. It’s a big game for us. I think we are very similar and very evenly matched.”
First-year guard Johnny Berhanemeskel, Ottawa, Ont., is leading the team in scoring after the weekend with 29 points. After Saturday’s win, Berhanemeskel identified the team need to work on “playing for the full 40 minutes; not going on highs and lows. We all have to stay together and that’s what we’re trying to do. We’re definitely seeing glimpses of it so we just try to stay steady.”
