The Gee-Gees will hit the road this weekend travelling to Ryerson and Toronto for their last regular season away games, before hosting Carleton on February 18 to close their season.
The Gee-Gees tipped their record to the winning side this past weekend as they captured two key victories, first 88-83 over York on Friday, and following with an 86-72 win over Laurentian on Saturday.
Both first-year guard Johnny Berhanemeskel, Ottawa, Ont., and third-year guard Warren Ward, London, Ont, had powerful performances in this weekend’s wins. In Friday’s win, Ward recorded 26 points and 10 rebounds, and followed it up with 16 points and 4 rebounds on Saturday. Berhanemeskel finished with 24 points on Friday and a season-high 31 points on Saturday. Berhanemeskel is currently 11thin the OUA in scoring at 15.84 and fifth in three point percentage at 45%.
“Winning one of three [final regular season games] clinches third place,” explained Deoruin, “And we’d like to get that win at Ryerson on Friday night and go from there.”
The garnet and grey are sitting in third in the OUA East, one game ahead of Ryerson and one position below Toronto. In their previous match-up in Ottawa early in January, uOttawa triumphed 88-76 over Ryerson but fell 77-73 to Toronto.
“I watched the tapes,” said Derouin of early January’s previous match-ups, “It was just a month ago, but we’re a much different team than we were a month ago. We’re looking forward to the games this weekend; everyone’s involved and excited.”
“We’ve been playing better for sure, it’s starting to come,” said Derouin, “And hopefully we can keep it going. You’re hoping you’re peaking at the right time and hoping you can continue.”
