Johnny Berhanemeskel was named the tournament MVP as the Gee-Gees went 3-0 at the Accreon Helen Campbell and Eric Garland Tournament, hosted by the University of New Brunswick. The fourth-year guard averaged 22.6 points per game while leading the Gee-Gees to three lop-sided victories in exhibition action.
The Gee-Gees kicked off the tournament with an 88-71 win over their hosts on Friday night, with Berhanemeskel providing the offensive highlights and totalling 27 points. Fourth-year post Gabriel Gonthier-Dubue backed him up with 18 points in his 24 minutes of work, while Mike L’Africain recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 assists at the point.
In Saturday’s game with Laval, Berhanemeskel once again led the way in a 95-73 win. The Ottawa native bucketed 19 points against the Rouge et Or, while Gonthier-Dubue provided nine points in the paint.
Sunday vs St. Francis-Xavier, whom the Gee-Gees will meet again this weekend at the Jack Donohue Tournament, the garnet and grey scored a 98-71 win. Berhanemeskel finished off with a 22-point performance against the X-men.
Gonthier-Dubue and L’Africain were named to the all-tournament team alongside Berhanemeskel. Sophomore wing Caleb Agada was also a standout for Ottawa, leading the team in rebounding against UNB and averaging 13.3 points, seven rebounds, and five assists over the weekend.
The Gee-Gees return to Ottawa and will host their own exhibition tournament, the annual Jack Donohue Invitational, this coming weekend. The tournament will feature St-FX, Queen’s and McGill.
