The Gee-Gees men’s basketball team spoiled the Guelph Gryphons’ home opener with a lopsided 106-76 victory on Friday night. The win brings no. 3 ranked Ottawa’s record to 3-0 to start the OUA regular season, while the Gryphons fall to 0-3.
Johnny Berhanemeskel led all scorers with 26 points including three treys, bringing his season average up to 27.0 points per game. Four other Gee-Gees also finished in double-digits.
Guelph received 13 points and 7 rebounds from Adam Kemp, who led the Gryphons in both categories.
Caleb Agada, who finished the game with 14 points and a game-high 8 rebounds, brought the energy level up for Ottawa early by finishing an alley-oop and dunking another opportunity in transition. The sophomore’s highlights led the 21-9 opening charge by the Gee-Gees which set them on their way.
Fellow sophomore Matt Nelson also provided some highlights, counting two putback dunks among his six points and six rebounds.
Ottawa’s largest lead, 76-39, came midway through the third quarter. The Gee-Gees shot 50.7 per cent from the field but only 6-18 from long range.
