Josh Gibson-Bascombe 30 points, 3 rebounds; Warren Ward 23 points, 5 rebounds – uOttawa
“It was a great game,” said head coach Dave DeAveiro, as the Gee-Gees recorded yet another win Friday evening in Sudbury, just squeaking by the Laurentian Voyageurs 83-78.
It was indeed a very close match-up all game, with the Gee-Gees leading by two after the first quarter, one after the second quarter and again by two points after the third.
With 4.2 seconds left in the game, Laurentian tried to gain possession of the ball by fouling and sending second-year guard Warren Ward (London, Ont.) to the line, but Ward would finish through for the Gee-Gees and score both baskets to secure a five point win over the Voyageurs.
“It’s a big win for us on the road,” added DeAveiro.
The Gee-Gees shot 47.4% for field goals, 31.6% at the three point line and 74.2% at the foul line, with the Voyageurs shooting 45.9% for field goals, 50.0% at the three point line and 88.9% at the foul line.
Fifth-year guard and all-time Gee-Gees leading scorer Josh Gibson-Bascombe (Toronto, Ont.) had a solid performance, scoring 12 free throws and nine field goals to combine for 30 points and two rebounds. Gibson-Bascombe also scored 30 points against the Voyageurs in their previous home game match-up this season.
This win now brings the Gee-Gees overall regular season record to 15 wins, three losses, and secures their No.2 spot in the OUA East.
The Gee-Gees now head to Toronto to take on the York Lions (4-13 OUA) Saturday evening. Game time is 8:00 p.m.
