The no. 2 ranked Gee-Gees men’s basketball team opened play at the 47th annual Wesmen Classic, hosted by the University of Winnipeg, with a 78-70 win over the Brandon Bobcats. The win advances Ottawa to Sunday’s tournament semifinal, which will pit the Ontario representatives against the Regina Cougars at 8 p.m. local time.

The victory also stretches the Gee-Gees’ overall CIS record to 17-1 this season, including an 8-0 mark against out-of conference foes.

Johnny Berhanemeskel led the offensive effort for Ottawa with 17 points and was named Player of the Game. Caleb Agada was a force on the boards, finishing with a game-high nine rebounds. Brandon was led by third-year guard A.M. Benabdelhak’s game-high 23 points. He also led the Bobcats with seven rebounds.

Ottawa went into the halftime break with a slim 35-29 lead but were able to extend their lead in the third quarter outscoring the Bobcats 24-13 to carry a 59-42 lead into the fourth quarter.

The third-quarter run was keyed by solid team three-point shooting, which helped to lift Mike L’Africain and Terry Thomas into double-figures in scoring. Thomas added an array of dunks to his performance, finishing with 11 points and two steals, while L’Africain bucketed 12 along with seven assists.

Tournament action continues throughout the day on Sunday, with the other semifinal featuring the University of Manitoba Bisons and the host Wesmen. The tournament championship game is slated for Monday, December 30 at 8 p.m. local time (9 p.m. EST).
