The University of Ottawa will raise the curtain on their 2012-2013 regular season, this Friday as they travel to London, Ontario to take on the University of Western. They will also be facing the tough University of Windsor Lancers on Saturday night.
On Friday night the team will attempt to repeat last year’s result as they defeated Western by 27 points thanks to a third quarter offensive burst. On the following night, Ottawa will travel to Windsor for game in which they expect to be challenging as the Lancers are ranked amongst the top ten teams of the country. Last season’s contest was a close battle in which the Gee-Gees defeated the Lancers in their home-opener, 69-64.
Despite the past injury-filled months, the Gee-Gees will be heading into the regular season with all their players healthy. However, this young squad’s biggest concern will be the time needed to build chemistry as they have not yet played a significant amount of time together due to injuries to important players.
“Ideally, you would like to have at least two months of playing together and we have had approximately two weeks,” stated head coach James Derouin who is optimistic about his team but realizes the players will need time to gel. “With some key players being absent at different times in the past months it’s been difficult to get into a rhythm but every day we see signs of this team coming together”.
The Gee-Gees lost the final game on their pre-season schedule versus talented Concordia University in a final score of 58-61. Despite creating 25 turnovers and playing stellar defensively, the team was unable to capitalise when in transition, which proved to be a decisive aspect of the game.
