Men’s Basketball (0-0 OUA, 1-1 overall)
Host the Jack Donohue Tournament from October 22-24, 2010 at Montpetit Hall.
The Gee-Gees will face some steep competition in pre-season action in this weekend’s 36th annual Jack Donohue tournament. The Gee-Gees will take on the Université du Québec à Montréal, St. Francis-Xavier University and the University of Toronto in tournament play this weekend.
The UQAM Citadins finished with an 11-5 regular season record though emerged as the Quebec champions for the 2009-2010 season, defeating Laval 78-75 in the final. They went on to the CIS championship tournament and lost 83-71 to Carleton in the quarter finals and then 79-74 to Windsor in the consolation semi-final.
St. Francis-Xavier X-Men finished second in the Atlantic league last season with an 18-2 record, losing to Cape Breton 94-77 in the championship game. StFX were the reigning champions in the Atlantic region for all but one year between 1999-2006 but been able to crack the top spot since then.
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues have been coming to the Jack Donohue Tournament for three straight years now, leaving last year as the tournament champions after defeating Cape Breton 76-68. The Varsity Blues finished last year’s regular season with a 12-11 record, losing 86-79 to York in the first round of OUA playoffs.
The Gee-Gees finished third at last year’s tournament with an 82-73 win over Bishop’s University. The Gee-Gees finished last year’s regular season with an 18-4 record, but didn’t advance to the CIS championships after disappointing losses to Carleton in the OUA East finals and to Lakehead in the OUA bronze medal game.
Despite having a quite different team from last season, this year’s talented group of Gee-Gees should be more than able to compete with the teams at this weekend’s tournament.
This tournament will also be an opportunity for the Gee-Gees to get some real game practice against several talented squads before the season starts and see how the team has come together through all the pre-season practice so far.
The Jack Donohue Tournament is a pre-season tournament the Gee-Gees host annually, named in honour of legendary coach Jack Donohue (1931-2003). Donohue coached for 17 years as the Canadian national men’s team coach and was the longest serving head coach in amateur or professional sport in Canada. Donohue’s impact on sport in Canada goes beyond his immense contribution to basketball, and is shared in the lives of all he interacted with.
Check out the Gee-Gees in action starting at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 22 as they take on last year’s Jack Donohue Tournament winners, the University of Toronto.
