First-year forward Warren Ward scored 18 points and added nine rebounds over a season-high 40 minutes Tuesday to help Gee-Gees men's basketball secure third-place with a 78-75 overtime win over the Alberta Golden Bears to close out the 42nd annual Winnipeg Wesmen Classic eight-team holiday tournament.
The Golden Bears led by one-point at the half before the teams ended regulation play tied 72-72.
Fourth-year newcomer point guard Josh Wright added 14 points with three assists as the Gee-Gees improved to 16-6 overall.
"We overcame a lot of adversity," said Gee-Gees head coach Dave DeAveiro. "The team worked extremely hard."
The Gee-Gees finished the tournament 2-1. Ward, 18, who also had three assists and two blocked shots, was uOttawa's player of the game.
Fourth-year guard C.G. Morrison paced the Golden Bears with 20 points and six rebounds over a game-high 41 minutes.
Brandon played Calgary later Tuesday for the tournament championship.
The Gee-Gees host Ryerson (5-4) Friday, January 9 (8:00 p.m.) to begin the second-half of the 2008-09 OUA East schedule.
