The Gee-Gees powered through to a 88-79 win over Queen’s tonight to close out a perfect weekend on the road.
“It was a good win,” said head coach James Derouin, “It was a back and forth game but the guys really played well and stepped it up.”
The Gee-Gees were able to maintain a slim lead throughout the first half, though it would be a strong 31 point third quarter that would see them through to the win, despite being outscored in the final frame.
First-year guard Johnny Berhanemeskel, Ottawa, Ont., was the Gee-Gees leading scorer once again tonight, finishing with 22 points and 6 rebounds, added to his 14 point performance in last night’s win over RMC. Third-year guard Warren Ward, London, Ont., finished with 20 points and 8 rebounds of his own.
“The story of the night for our team is that we went 26/29 from the free throw line,” said Derouin, “We shot 89% from the line [tonight] and we had shot 62% for the season. It was a huge turnaround for us and something we’ve been working on.”
The Gee-Gees will return home to host York(6-6 OUA) on Friday, January 21 and Laurentian (6-6 OUA) on Saturday, January 22, both at 8:00 p.m. at Montpetit Hall. (SSN Canada)
