Gee-Gees dominate in international action

Saturday October 31, 2009

The Gee-Gees close out the pre-season with a decisive 93-69 win over the Polish Asseco Prokom team. Asseco Prokom is from the town of Gdynia, Poland and plays in the Polish league’s second division.  And despite any verbal language barrier, the language of sports seems universal.

The Gee-Gees took an early lead at the start of the first quarter and it only continued to grow as the first half progressed, with uOttawa leading 48-27 heading into the half.  Asseco Prokom had a tough time sinking baskets in the first half but came racing into the third quarter scoring an impressive 30 points in the single quarter.  But the Gee-Gees came together in the fourth quarter, closing out the game with a 93-69 win.

Fifth-year guard Josh Gibson-Bascombe (Toronto, Ont.) led the scoring for the Gee-Gees, sinking 20 points and was flawless once again on his 6 free throws.

Second-year guard Max Clarkson (Peterborough, Ont.) also contributed a solid 19 points for uOttawa. While not a starter, Clarkson says his secret to his high scoring is “working hard.  You’re not always gonna be the starter.  But if you’re coming off the bench you want to be working as hard as you can and contributing to the team.”

Coach Dave DeAveiro was pleased with the team’s performance today.  “We played well today.  We were active on both offence and defence.”

This week will be spent getting “prepared for next weekend,” says DeAveiro, “[We’re] playing some tough teams on the road.  [And] it’s always tough to win on the road.”

The Gee-Gees begin their season next weekend at Brock (November 6) and Guelph (November 7).  The Gee-Gees will host their home opener against Western on November 13 at 8:00pm at Montpetit. (SSN Canada)
