HAMILTON, Ont. – Ontario University Athletics (OUA) is pleased to announce this year’s men’s basketball east division all-stars, sponsored by Wilson Sports. The major award winners will be announced tomorrow, March 1, at the Wilson Cup awards breakfast in Toronto.
The Gee-Gees list two OUA first team all-stars on their roster in Warren Ward and Johnny Berhanemeskel. Ward had a standout senior year after sitting out the majority of last season due to injury. The fifth-year guard netted 17.8 points per game, good for second in team scoring, and led the Gee-Gees with 75 assists. Ward grabbed 153 boards and averaged 1.8 steals per game. This is Ward’s third first team honour.
Berhanemeskel led the No. 3 ranked Gee-Gees with 18.9 points per game, tucking him just inside the top 15 in CIS scoring. He also set the OUA single-season record for three-pointers made per game by draining 70 long range shots this year. That performance earned the Ottawa native his second recognition on the first all-star team.
Ottawa’s Mehdi Tihani was also recognized for his excellent play as the Gee-Gees’ sixth man this season. The 6-2 guard logged an average of just under twenty minutes per game, giving the Gee-Gees a second option at point guard and a spark of intensity on defence.
The first team was rounded out by Phil Scrubb and Tyson Hinz of the Carleton Ravens, and Aaron Best of the Ryerson Rams. The full list and details of the 2013 OUA all-star selections is available in the OUA release.
