Gee-Gees men’s basketball head coach James Derouin has a busy summer ahead of him and it kicks into gear next weekend when the U17 Men's National Team open try-outs take place in Toronto on June 3.
Derouin is returning as an assistant coach with the national team for a second summer. He joined the staff in 2015 and helped the team achieve a silver medal at the FIBA Americas U16 championship. That result means that Derouin and the team are heading to the FIBA U17 World Championship in Zaragoza, Spain from June 22-July 3.
Canada Basketball has not yet announced the team’s exhibition schedule, but the team is expected to add games in Europe in advance of the championship.
The Gee-Gees bench boss was also recently involved with some of Canada’s top high school talent at the BioSteel All-Canadian Game where he coached slam dunk champ Jaelin Llewellyn and game MVP Kalif Young as part of the second annual showcase. Llewellyn was part of the 2015 U16 national team, as was Ignaz Brazdeikis who also suited up for Derouin’s Team Red at the All-Canadian Game.
The OUA basketball schedule for 2016-17 will be released in June.
