HEADLINE: DeAveiro wins No. 100
Fourth-year guard Josh Gibson-Bascombe led all scorers with a 26 point performance in a 67-60 win over the visiting Guelph Gryphons to grant Gee-Gee coach Dave DeAverio the 100th victory of his career in regular season Saturday night.
“I didn’t know that”, said DeAverio, who was much more focused on his players’ win. “It’s important for us to get this win tonight, they were physical, we’re not used to that kind of basketball.”
The No. 8 Gee-Gees now improve to 5-1 in the OUA East and are tied for first place with cross-town rivals and CIS No. 1 Carleton Ravens. Guelph fell to 3-3 in the OUA West.
The Gee-Gees led by only a basket at the half, but came alive in the third quarter thanks in part to Gibson-Bascombe’s perfect free throws and team-high 10 rebounds.
Fifth-year post Dax Desserault and rookie forward Warren Ward both added 12 points and four rebounds each for the Gee-Gees.
Nick Pankerichan led the Guelph offensive effort with 12 points and three rebounds. Guelph dominated the key, out-rebounding the Gee-Gees 41 to 36.
“They’re a very physical team, they play hard”, said Gibson-Bascombe. When asked about DeAverio’s 100th win, Gibson-Bascombe had only good things to say about his coach, “He … pushes us to the limit.”
uOttawa travels to Waterloo (5-1) on November 28th (8:00pm) and Wilfrid Laurier (3-3) (8:00pm) on November 29th.
