Community partnership renewed through 2016

Thursday October 14, 2010

In conjunction with Carleton University and the University of Ottawa, Scotiabank Place announced earlier this week that the venue will host the fifth annual MBNA Capital Hoops Classic on Wednesday, January 26, 2011. The latest edition of the Hoops Classic will once again feature two games: a women's matchup between the Carleton Ravens and the uOttawa Gee-Gees at 6 p.m., followed by the men's contest between the same schools at 8 p.m. The 2011 event marks the first of a six-year renewed agreement between the schools, which sees Scotiabank Place continue to host the event through 2016.

"We're thrilled to not only announce the return of the MBNA Capital Hoops Classic in 2011 but to continue our partnership with both Carleton and the University of Ottawa for the next six years," said Cyril Leeder, Senators Sports & Entertainment president. "With the intensity of the on-court rivalry between the universities seemingly at an all-time high, our commitment to helping grow the sport in our community is reaffirmed with this agreement renewal and goes hand-in-hand with our passion for bringing quality events to our building."

"The University of Ottawa values the community partnerships that enable us to showcase our great university athletic programs," said uOttawa's athletic director Luc Gélineau. "The fifth edition of the MBNA Capital Hoops Classic will once again give us an opportunity to enrich the student-life experience and will give our students and our student-athletes a memory that will last a lifetime."

The fifth annual MBNA Capital Hoops Classic, an event which continues to showcase some of the finest basketball players in the country, sets the stage for the Final 8 CIS men's basketball championship, which will be held in Halifax from March 11-13, 2011. Following the 2012 championship (also set to take place in Halifax), the Final 8 will return to Scotiabank Place for two years with the Ravens once again serving as hosts in 2013 and 2014.
