The Gee-Gees men’s basketball team used a 50-27 halftime lead to bank its fifteenth win of the regular season against the Queen’s Gaels on Saturday night. Ottawa scuffled through the fourth quarter which allowed Queen’s to pull the final margin to 91-81.

Johnny Berhanemeskel led all scorers with 24 points and for the second consecutive night was magical during the first half before spending much of the second twenty minutes on the bench. The fifth-year guard had 17 points at the half and finished with a 25 minute night.

Mike L’Africain added 18 points for Ottawa, joining fellow starters Caleb Agada (14) and Gabriel Gonthier-Dubue (14) in double digits.

Third-year Patrick Street had the hot hand for Queen’s in the second half, providing some highlights for the home side from long distance and pulling the tricolour within theoretical striking distance. He finished with 22 points.

The Gee-Gees went 3-3 from long range in the first quarter and continued to run a quick offence in the second, building a 33-15 lead before a Queen’s timeout two minutes into the frame. The Gaels were largely limited to outside shots but went just 2-for-7 from beyond the arc to start the game.

Ottawa shot 56 per cent from the field in the game and were actually more accurate in the second half. Still, Queen’s made inroads thanks to 17 Gee-Gee turnovers and 61 per cent shooting in the second half.

Queen’s was briefly within 14 points at the beginning of the fourth quarter after trailing 70-53 to open the frame. The lead did not shrink down to 10 until the final minute of the game.

The Gee-Gees will wrap up the regular season with a pair of home games next weekend. Nipissing (0-17) will be at Montpetit Hall on Friday night, followed by Laurentian (7-10) on Saturday.
