HEADLINE: Whitlock steals playoff win
Second-year goaltender Riley Whitlock made 46 saves Friday night for a 3-2 Gee-Gees men’s hockey playoff win over McGill to extend its season.
The best-of-three OUA East quarter-final series is tied 1-1.
Game three will be played at McGill Sunday, February 22 (3:00 p.m.).
The Redmen out-shot the Gee-Gees 48-16 for the game, including 17-5 in the first period and 17-1 in the third.
“Just keep going, shot after shot,” said Whitlock, who also withstood a brief 6-on-3 in the third period as the Redmen were pressing to end the series after a 5-1 home win Wednesday.
“Riley was the elite dominant goaltender that you need at this time of year,” said Gee-Gees head coach Dave Leger. “This program is well served having him around in the future.”
The Gee-Gees managed three goals on just 16 shots.
Third-year right wing Keven Gagne’s game winner came off a second-period powerplay, five minutes after fourth-year centre Kevin Glode put the Gee-Gees ahead 2-1.
First-year left wing Matthieu Methot staked the Gee-Gees to a 1-0 lead with a wrist shot off a partial breakaway at 13:58 of the first period.
Whitlock stopped 35 shots last Saturday in a 2-1 uOttawa home win over McGill on the second-to-last game of the regular season to all but lock up an eighth straight playoff berth.
