Gee-Gees overcome slow start to bury Patriotes in home opener

Men’s Hockey (2-0-0 OUA)

The uOttawa men’s hockey team hosted UQTR on Saturday evening at the uOttawa Minto Sports Complex, defeating the Patriotes 6-2 in their home opener.

The Gee-Gees won their second game in as many nights against a Patriote team that ranked third in the CIS Top Ten before the weekend.

The garnet and grey picked up the pace after getting off to a slow start, scoring four unanswered goals and handing the Patriotes their first loss of the 2012-2013 season in front of a large and raucous crowd.

“As far as winning is concerned, tonight was very good,” said Gee-Gees head coach Réal Paiement. “We can play a lot better than we have the past two nights though. We need to resolve some things moving forward.”

The Patriotes were the first to get on the scoreboard Friday night, capitalizing on poor Gee-Gees defensive play just 32 seconds into the game. The Patriote forecheck caused a big turn over deep in the Gee-Gees zone with UQTR forward Louis-Michel Lafreniere emerging with the puck and stretching around Gee-Gee goaltender Russell Abbott, giving the Patriotes the early lead.

“We weren’t moving our feet, and they made a play that was very difficult to defend,” said Paiement. “For the first five minutes, it seemed like we didn’t want the puck.”

Second year forward Matt White got the scoring started for the Gee-Gees seven minutes later, taking advantage of a big rebound given up by Patriote goaltender Marc-Antoine Gelinas. White’s goal kick started the Gee-Gees bench who scored three consecutive goals thereafter. Goal scorers were Alexandre Touchette, David Foucher and Maxime Latraverse.

After giving up the early goal, returning goaltender Abbott made 25 saves to backstop the Gee-Gees in solid fashion. Abbott made big saves on numerous UQTR breakaways and odd-man rushes.

“It feels great to beat two nationally ranked teams to start the season,” said Abbott. “Those are two teams we didn’t win a single game against last year, so coming out on top of both games this weekend is a huge step forward for us.”

The Patriotes managed to score on a shorthanded breakaway opportunity, but that is as close as the visiting team would make it. The Gee-Gees would get insurance goals from Matthieu Tanguay-Theriault and Touchette, his second of the game.

The Gee-Gees will have until next Friday to prepare for their next match up at Concordia at 7:30 p.m.
