Men’s Hockey (1-0-0 OUA)
The Gee-Gees men’s hockey team started their season in impressive fashion Friday night, defeating defending national champion McGill Redmen 4-2 in Montreal.
The veterans led the way for uOttawa on Friday night, who outshot the Redmen 27-25 in their opening game of the season.
With the match all square heading into the third period, the garnet & grey were the team that was able to finish things off, scoring two goals in the final frame. Rookie forward Matthieu Tanguay-Theriault scored the game winning goal in his first game in the garnet & grey livery.
Third year forward Stephen Blunden scored the first two Gee-Gee goals on the evening and added an assist on Matt White’s final goal of the game.
Veteran goaltender Russell Abbott also carried over his fine form from last season, backstopping the Gee-Gees with 23 saves on the evening.
Both teams were unable to register a goal on the power play Friday night. McGill was given seven odd man advantages, while the Gee-Gees had three opportunities.
The Redmen start the season 0-3, one less loss than they suffered in the entire 2011-2012 campaign.
The Gee-Gees will return to the uOttawa Minto Sports Complex on Saturday at 7 p.m. for their home opener.
