The University of Ottawa Sports Services will implement several updates to its current Competitive Sport Club program in 2018 after a significant review process. The updates include the creation of a Varsity Club tier of teams which will include Rowing, Men’s Rugby, and Men’s Golf, as well as the addition of existing SFUO clubs for Alpine Skiing, Men’s Lacrosse, and Nordic Skiing into the Competitive Sport Club tier which is overseen by Sports Services.
Twenty sport clubs participated in the program review which examined Competition, Administration, Training Environment and Governance. More details of the review process are available here.
The Varsity Club tier is designed to expand the service levels and competition access for its teams, recognizing their strong potential for success. The men’s rugby team will join the RSEQ conference in 2018 and compete in its regular season and conference playoffs for the first time. The rowing team and men’s golf team have each had medal performances at recent OUA championships and will continue to compete at those events, with increased focus on student-athlete support and experience.
“The review provided us with extremely valuable insight as we look to build a Sport Model which properly supports all of our student-athletes,” notes Sue Hylland, Director of Sports Services. “I would like to thank all of the teams who participated in our review process and look forward to continuing to work with our coaches and volunteers as we implement these updates next season.”
Sports Services is cognizant of the desire of teams to aspire to Varsity Club or Competitive Sport Club status. This is the first significant change to the Competitive Sports Clubs since 2002. Going forward, all teams will be evaluated on an annual basis with changes possible between tiers determined on a three-year calendar.
