The women’s basketball team used a strong first half effort to dispatch the Laurentian Voyageurs 61-51 on Saturday night in Sudbury, completing a two-win road weekend. The no. 10 ranked Gee-Gees are now 8-3 on the season and sit tied with the Carleton Ravens for first place in the OUA East.

Fifth-year post Angela Tilk led Ottawa in scoring for the first time this season, netting 20 points along with six rebounds.

“She’s working hard to get it together but it’s been such a process,” said Ottawa head coach Andy Sparks of Tilk, who is returning from an ACL injury and adjusting to the Gee-Gees’ system after transferring from Ryerson. “She’s a major part of our offensive post play and we really pushed the post touches tonight which allowed her to work. She’s going to come in to her own by the end of the year.”

Ottawa, utilizing strong defensive pressure and an uptempo style led 32-14 at halftime but suffered from a lack of focus late which allowed a rejuvenated Voyageurs squad to creep back into the game. The Gee-Gees maintained 40 per cent field goal shooting in both halves, but let up on the defensive end while Laurentian surged with 20 fourth quarter points.

Stephanie MacDonald and Danielle Marion also reached double-digits in scoring with 13 and 11, respectively, while Catherine Traer led the squad with eight rebounds. Emma Decloe scored 20 points for Laurentian.
