Women’s Basketball: At Home Against Lakehead and McMaster

Wednesday November 24, 2010

Women’s Basketball (3-3 OUA)

vs Lakehead (5-1 OUA) on Friday, November 26, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. (SSN Canada)

vs McMaster (3-3 OUA) on Saturday, November 27, 2010 at 5:45 p.m. (Rogers, SSN Canada)

After three straight wins to open the season, the Gee-Gees have now suffered three straight losses. But with the long-awaited debut of third-year centre Jenna Gilbert (Ottawa, Ont.), the garnet and grey are hoping to advance to the winning side once again in their final pair of games before the Christmas break, taking on Lakehead and McMaster at home.

“It’s the start of a process,” explained Head Coach Andy Sparks about integrating Gilbert into the line-up, “It’s a whole new dynamic to develop. We need to get the ball to go through her hands as much as possible on offensive floor and the will have to learn to adjust to that and she [Gilbert] will have to learn to play with that.”

The Gee-Gees suffered a pair of losses this past weekend to two nationally ranked teams, first to the number one Windsor Lancers 81-58 and then to the number five Western Mustangs 58-35 the following night.

Though they were hoping to have their roster back to full strength for this weekend, a number of sudden injuries have left a depleted Gee-Gees squad once again this weekend.

“We can just play one game at a time,” said Sparks, “[Lakehead] is a very solid team and we’ll have a very good test from them.”

[McMaster’s] got good team size and they play a more aggressive style than Lakehead,” continued Sparks, “They’ll come at us with more pressure and we’re going to need to respond to that.”

Fourth-year centre Hannah Sunley-Paisley (Toronto, Ont.) is still heading up the OUA leader board, fifth in points per game with 16.83 and first in rebounds per game with 11.17. First-year guard Sarah Nolette (Edmonton, Alb.) is currently second in the OUA in three-point field goal percentage, sinking the basket almost 55% of the time.

Be sure to come out and check out the Gee-Gees in their final games before Christmas, at Montpetit Hall. Please note that Saturday night’s game against McMaster will tip-off at 5:45 p.m. due to its broadcast by Rogers.
