The Gee-Gees women’s basketball team has developed a tradition under head coach Andy Sparks. Each year, the team travels to Prince Edward Island in October for the Mickey Place Memorial Tournament. This weekend the garnet and grey will tip off against Acadia, Bishop’s, and their hosts from UPEI.
Ottawa will face Acadia on Friday afternoon in the tournament opener. The Axewomen were 4-16 last regular season and Ottawa handled them 72-56 during winter exhibition action. The Gee-Gees also earned an exhibition wins over Bishop’s and UPEI last season at the Mickey Place tourny, taking 62-43 and 81-65 victories respectively. UPEI had a breakout season after that, recording a 13-7 mark in the regular season and advancing to the AUS Championship game.
The Gee-Gees head into the tournament with a 1-2 exhibition record against CIS teams. The squad dropped a close 57-51 loss to the Laval Rouge et Or last weekend in Quebec City, and is looking for a bounce back performance this weekend. Head coach Andy Sparks is also hoping to feature as many players as possible from his bench, preparing for the regular season’s start on November 6.
