Katie Goggins 14 points, 10 rebounds; Mylaine Mageau 14 points, 2 rebounds – Laurentian
Hannah Sunley-Paisley - 18 points, 12 rebounds; Melina Wishart 14 points, 2 rebounds – uOttawa
After losing to the Gee-Gees 73-50 in Ottawa earlier this season, the Voyageurs were not ready to let this game slip them by as they went on to record their ninth in a row at home in a 75-60 victory over the Gee-Gees Friday evening at the Ben F. Avery Gymnasium.
Both the Voyageurs and Gee-Gees came out strong from the start, with the Gee-Gees scoring four of six three pointers in the first quarter and Laurentian going 12 for 12 from the free throw line in first quarter.
Laurentian’s fifth-year forward Darrah Bumstead (New Hamburg, Ont), who currently leads the CIS standings in total rebounds, continued to dominate defensively throughout the game, adding lots of pressure on uOttawa’s third-year centre Hannah Sunley-Paisley (Toronto, Ont.).
Despite the added pressure, Sunley-Paisley managed to fight through it and lead both teams in scoring with an impressive 18 points, 12 rebounds. Fourth-year guard Melina Wishart (Ottawa, Ont.) also had a solid game, contributing 14 points, 2 rebounds. Both Sunley-Paisley and Wishart were 100% from the free throw line.
“We gave Laurentian 26 points at the free throw line,” said assistant head coach Mario Gaetano. As a team, the Gee-Gees accumulated a total of 25 fouls, as opposed to Laurentian’s 16.
“We just didn’t make easy shots,” he added.
The Gee-Gees will hope to turn things around tomorrow and add another victory to their record as they face the York Lions (3-16 OUA) on the road. Tip-off is 6:00 p.m.
