The first Desjardins uOttawa Female Athlete of the Week of 2013 is Maddie Stephen of the women’s basketball team. Stephen led the Gee-Gees to a pair of victories over York and Laurentian this weekend, recording a double-double in each of the wins. The 6-foot-1 second-year forward now leads the CIS in rebounds per game with an average of 12.1. That average received a boost when Stephen grabbed 21 rebounds against Laurentian on Saturday night, including 10 on the offensive end. Stephen also recorded 11 rebounds against York and 11 points in each of the two games. She has seven double-doubles through the first ten games of the season, and is averaging 12.2 points per game. The Gee-Gees have now won six straight games are tied for first place in the OUA East.
This week’s male honouree is Dominic Jalbert from the hockey team. Jalbert scored the game-tying goal in the third period of Ottawa’s shootout victory over the McGill Redmen on Saturday. The third-year defenceman wired a top shelf shot from the top of the circle after collecting the puck on the sideboard on the Gee-Gees power play. The goal was his fourth of the season, and the Gatineau native leads the team in points with 18 on the season. The goal helped Ottawa record their second win of the season over McGill, the first time the team has done so since the 2008-09 season. The men’s hockey team’s next home game is Sunday, January 13 when they will host the Ryerson Rams at 2 p.m.
