The uOttawa Athletes of the Week for February 21 are Mathieu Newcomb and Danielle Marion from the men’s hockey and women’s basketball teams.
Newcomb scored one of the most memorable goals of the 2016-17 men’s hockey season at the 8:07 mark of double-over time to lift the Gee-Gees to a 3-2 win on home ice in game two of the OUA quarterfinal series against Queen’s to stave off elimination. Newcomb also scored the first goal of the game for the Gee-Gees which evened the score at 1-1. Newcomb, an economics student from Grande-Digue, N.B., scored eight goals and nine assists in the regular season ranking fourth on the team in points. The Gee-Gees men’s hockey season came to an end on Saturday night, but with a fantastic on and off-ice return to the OUA all involved are looking forward to next year.
Danielle Marion helped power the Gee-Gees women’s basketball team to an upset win over the no. 8 ranked Ryerson Rams to cap off the final weekend of regular season play 2-0. Marion, a third-year Health Sciences student from Welland, Ont., scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds in the win against Ryerson while also contributing outstanding defensive work in the paint. Marion added eight points, four rebounds, and three steals in Ottawa’s Friday night win over Toronto. The women’s basketball team finished with a 13-6 regular season record, good for sixth in the OUA standings, and host Western (8-12) for an OUA first round playoff game on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Montpetit Hall.
