The uOttawa Athletes of the Week for November 28 are Julia Soriano from the undefeated women’s basketball team and Montana Champagne from men’s swimming.
Soriano led the Gee-Gees to a pair of wins this weekend, highlighted by her 17-point performance on Saturday at Nipissing. The fifth-year guard also pulled down eight rebounds in the contest and added two steals. In Friday’s game the Toronto native produced seven points, five rebounds, and four steals. Soriano’s hustle and determination have helped to guide the team to a 3-0 start to the regular season, and the team will be centre stage at Home Opener weekend at Montpetit Hall this coming weekend. The Gee-Gees take on McMaster at 6 p.m. on Friday, and Brock on Saturday. Tickets are available online at tickets.geegees.ca
Champagne captured wins in both the 200 and 400-metre individual medley events at the OUA Fairweather Divisional Championship this weekend. The third-year swimmer and Human Resource Management student also placed third in the 200m breaststroke event. Champagne was the OUA silver medalist in the medley events in 2016, and he defeated the defending gold medalist, Hochan Ryu of Toronto, in both events this weekend. Champagne won the 400 by over three seconds with a time of 4:20.10, which is the fourth fastest time by a university swimmer in the nation so far this season.
