The no. 7 ranked uOttawa women’s basketball team (14-2) opened the final regular season home weekend by overtaking the University of Waterloo Warriors, 72-51 at Montpetit Hall. The win keeps Ottawa at the top of the OUA North standings as well as the OUA overall rankings.
The Gee-Gees took charge early with quick buckets from fourth-year veteran, Kellie Ring and a three dropped by Julia Dostaler. The Warriors matched bucket for bucket with big numbers from three starters, Nicole Schlick, Emily Wilk, and Kristen Osborne, who together scored their team's entire 16 points in the first quarter. The Warriors trailed by a tally of 19-16 after the first ten minutes. Six-foot-two post, Schlick sealed the team high for the Warriors with 16 points and 6 rebounds to end the game followed closely in point by Wilke, putting up 15 points and 2 assists of her own.
A foul shot by Kristen Osborne to complete her three-point play tied it up early in the second quarter at 21-21 before the Gee-Gees began to pull away closing the half at 37-28. Osborne finished the game with 13 points and 4 rebounds.
The Gee-Gees held Waterloo down hovering around a two-figure lead for the remainder of the second half with a final push from Kellie Ring netting the game high of 21 points, 3 assists, as well as pulling down big boards with 9 rebounds to stretch the lead to 20 points. Second-year guard, Julia Dostaler added to Ottawa’s lead with 12 points, 2 steals and an assist and a block.
