Moriah made it

Friday June 5, 2009

Gee-Gees women’s basketball assistant coach Moriah Trowell was named Thursday team leader for the Canadian women’s basketball entry at the 2009 FISU summer games.

The Ottawa native who brings experience with the U-18 and U-19 women’s national basketball programs was surprised to learn she will serve as the main point of contact for the Canadian university team at the July 1-12 games in Belgrade, Serbia.

“I was worried they would forget about me,” said Trowell, 25, a first-year uOttawa assistant coach last season who played with the Canadian national team at the 2001 Francophone Games before spending 2003-05 with the Gee-Gees at guard.   “I am basically there to coordinate everything."

Trowell returns to Canada July 14 and will then serve as team leader with the Canadian U-19 women's basketball team for the world championships in Thailand.
“Six weeks top to bottom,” said Trowell. “I lucked out this year big time.”
