Kellie Ring Makes Jump to Senior National Team

Sunday March 11, 2012

After playing with the cadette and junior women’s national teams for Canada Basketball over the past three summers, Ottawa native and Gee-Gee standout Kellie Ring has earned the right to once again don the red and white jersey, this time trying out for the Senior Women’s ‘B’ Team.

Canada Basketball announced the roster of invitees for the tryout by invitation for the team on Friday. 14 athletes have been invited to the camp, including 7 who currently play in the CIS. Several invited athletes have been teammates of Ring’s on previous national teams, including Windsor’s Korissa Williams, and UBC’s Kristijana Young, whom the Gee-Gees battled with in this year’s CIS playoffs.

Ring is one of seven guards in Toronto with the team, which is being coached by Cape Breton University’s Fabien McKenzie. The camp will run until May 17.

The B team exists to act as a feeder system to the Senior Women’s National Team which competes at Olympic and World Championships, and the qualifying tournaments for those events. The B team allows younger athletes to continue to learn the national team systems and stay within the development pathway to the Senior Team while they are of university age. This year, the team will travel to Belgium for exhibition matches against the national teams of Belgium and Montenegro from May 17-27.

Meanwhile, Gee-Gee head coach Andy Sparks is busy finalizing the roster for the Junior Women’s National Team. The final tryout for that team will be held at the end of May, and Gee-Gee recruit Catherine Traer is still in the mix.
