Katherine Lemoine scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the no. 10 Gee-Gees who rolled to a 78-52 victory over the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Saturday night. The second-year post was 11-for-15 from the field and was one of four Gee-Gees to reach double-figures in the win.
Lemoine had 16 points at halftime thanks to crisp passing inside by the Gee-Gees, who had the game in control from the opening minutes. An 11-4 start was buoyed by a three-pointer from rookie wing Sarah Besselink and two inside finishes by Lemoine, who also displayed her ability to finish in transition.
The lead grew to 38-16 at halftime, and although Lakehead was able to draw fouls in third they could not slow down the Gee-Gees’ offence which poured in 24 points in the third stanza.
The Thunderwolves shot only 24.2 per cent from the field and bucketed 17 points from the line. Fifth-year guard Kelsey Bardsley was the lone bright spot for the home squad, scoring 18 points including four three-pointers.
Toronto native Maddie Stephen recorded her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds for Ottawa, giving her 12 in her career. Fifth-year Angela Tilk and fourth-year Stephanie MacDonald also reached double-digits with 11 points apiece.
The win improves Ottawa’s record to 3-1 after two weeks of regular season action. Coming up, Ottawa will be on the road for the second straight week when they visit Brock and McMaster November 15 and 16.
