The no. 9 Gee-Gees women’s basketball team used a strong fourth quarter to overcome no. 7 Brock on the Badgers’ home court by a 54-51 score on Friday night. The victory provided a boost for Ottawa in the OUA East standings, as they takeover first with a 4-1 record.
Ottawa trailed by 48-41 with four minutes to play, but forced a pair of turnovers and capitalized with a Catherine Traer three-pointer and a basket by Stephanie MacDonald following her own steal.
The Badgers had opportunities to maintain their lead from the free throw line but struggled to convert the late shots. Brock shot 13-21 from the free throw line over the course of the contest.
MacDonald scored 15 on the night for the Gee-Gees and also led the team in rebounding with nine. It was also a strong night for Ottawa rookie Sarah Besselink, as she notched 14 points in the winning effort.
Brock’s fourth-year guard Samantha De Jong led all scorers with 19 points, while 2013 All-Canadian Nicole Rosenkranz was good for 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The Gee-Gees will face another difficult OUA West test on Saturday when they visit the 5-0 McMaster Marauders.
