Their last road trip of the regular season proved to be a challenging one for the Gee-Gees, as they went on to pick up their second defeat of the weekend in a 64-53 loss to the University of Toronto’s Varsity Blues Saturday evening.
After a slow start for both teams, with each going on to shoot under 18% in the first eight minutes, the Gee-Gees went on to open up the second quarter with a 12-4 run to gain a lead. However, it was not long before the Varsity Blues would respond with a 12-3 run of their own to secure a seven point lead at halftime.
The Blues would go onto outscore the Gee-Gees by one point in the third and by three points in the fourth quarter to sustain their lead until the end and add a 10th consecutive win to their record.
Third-year centre Jenna Gilbert, Ottawa, Ont., led her team in their scoring efforts with 19 points, 9 rebounds, while first-year guard Tatiana Hanlan, Gatineau, Qué., added 13 points. Fourth-year centre Hannah Sunley-Paisley, Toronto, Ont., recorded another double-double, finishing with a solid 16 rebounds and 11 points.
The Gee-Gees will return home and will look to add one more win to their record next Saturday, February 19, when they play host to the Carleton Ravens at Montpetit Hall at 8:00 p.m. They will certainly look to even the score between them and their rivals, after losing in double overtime to the Ravens at the MBNA Capital Hoops Classic just weeks ago.
