The Gee-Gees women’s basketball team went 1-1 this weekend in exhibition action against the UQAM Citadins in Montreal.
Julia Soriano had a big game in Ottawa’s 67-54 win on Saturday morning. The fourth-year guard piled up 21 points including 4-of-6 shooting from long distance. Ottawa jumped out to a 21-12 lead in the first quarter with Soriano contributing an incredible 15 points.
The Gee-Gees took their biggest lead of the game with two and a half minutes left in the third quarter when sophomore Jen Crowe completed an and-one to make it 55-33, and the team finished things out for a 67-54 win. Catherine Traer and Kellie Ring each added ten points.
In Friday’s Game One, Ottawa trailed 27-18 at halftime before storming back to tie the game at 29-29 in the third quarter thanks in part to a pair of treys by Kellie Forand, who led the team with 18 points in the game.
The Gee-Gees pulled ahead to 33-29 before stalling offensively for the remainder of the third quarter and UQAM led 37-33 heading into the final frame. After Isabelle Dion sank a jumper to open the fourth, the teams were never separated by more than three points. UQAM scored points late from the free throw line and forced Ottawa into turnovers to take a 48-45 win.
Ottawa will travel back to la Belle Province next week to take on the Laval Rouge et Or and CEGEP Ste-Foy in Quebec City. The regular season begins at home on November 6.
