The University of Ottawa Gee-Gees women’s basketball team will tip off their regular season this Friday at Western. On the following night they will then travel to Windsor for a contest versus their heated playoff rivals and defending national champions in the Lancers.
The Gee-Gees will have their sights set on the Saturday night matchup versus Windsor as the teams have built up quite a rivalry in recent years. Ottawa defeated Windsor in two of last year’s three meetings, including in the OUA championship game. Windsor starts the season as the number one ranked team in the CIS national coaches’ poll, a nod to the fact that they retain a large chunk of last year’s national championship winning roster. The Gee-Gees will once again do battle with familiar foes Miah-Marie Langlois, Jessica Clemencon, and Bojana Kovacevic, this time on the Lancers’ home turf; all of last season’s meetings came at Montpetit Hall.
Firstly, however, Ottawa will face the Western Mustangs squad who finished last season an even 11-11 in the OUA West. Western’s preseason schedule has left them with a 4-5 record against CIS competition thus far, though they are a dangerous team which features two returning OUA All-Stars and a member of last year’s OUA West All-Rookie team. Ottawa won the lone contest between the two sides last season by a score of 79-62.
Ottawa, which missed being voted tenth in the CIS poll by one vote, are eager to get the regular season started after a preseason marked by injuries to key players. With players such as starting point guard Kellie Ring, Ariane Lachance-Scantland, and recruit Katherine Lemoine all missing preseason time, the players and coaches have yet to see the full picture of the team. Chances are they will have a much better sense following this weekend’s action.
