Ottawa jumped in front of the Ryerson Rams in the second quarter of Friday’s OUA East matchup but had to withstand a strong fourth quarter push to hang on for a 59-57 win on the road.
The Gee-Gees held a 51-39 lead heading into the fourth quarter and extended their lead to fifteen points in the early going of the final frame. The Danielle Marion three-pointer with just over seven minutes remaining was the final field goal that Ottawa would score while the Rams came back with 12 unanswered points.
Both teams struggled from the field with Ottawa shooting 30.6 per cent while the Rams went 13-56 in the contest. Ryerson did make an impact from the free throw line, scoring 29 of their 57 points from the line. Ryerson’s Mariah Nunes sank 16 points from the line as part of her game-high 29 points.
Nunes also scored 14 points in the fourth quarter, leading the Rams’ comeback efforts. Julia Soriano went 2-4 from the free throw line in the final minutes to secure the win for Ottawa. Soriano scored 12 while Angela Tilk led Ottawa with 15 points and 17 rebounds.
A 22-point second quarter powered Ottawa to the win following a slow first quarter by both teams. After ten minutes the score was deadlocked at 8-8, but Ottawa went into halftime with at 30-21 lead.
