The University of Ottawa’s women’s basketball team posted their largest point total of the season in Friday’s 85-49 win over the winless Algoma Thunderbirds in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The Gee-Gees were led by senior guard Stephanie MacDonald who bucketed 21 points in 18 minutes of action.

A hard-working Algoma team had difficulty containing the No. 10 ranked Gee-Gees inside, sending Ottawa to the free-throw line a season high 30 times where the visitors were able to pad their lead with 21 points.

Head coach Andy Sparks spread his team’s minutes around, with all available players contributing at least 13 minutes of court time. Rookie Danielle Marion led the team with seven rebounds while Sarah Besselink also reached double-digits in scoring with 12 points.

Ottawa shot 44 per cent from the field as a team and forced Algoma into 26 turnovers. The Gee-Gees also topped the T-birds on the glass, collecting 39 rebounds compared to 22 for Algoma.

The win moves the Gee-Gees to 7-3 in the regular season, maintaining a tie for first place in the OUA East with the Carleton Ravens and the Queen’s Gaels.
