Game Story :
After losing their first two games at the Concordia-Reebok Women’s Basketball Tournament in Montreal the Gee-Gees finished of their three day excursion to Quebec with a 67-46 win over the Queen’s Gaels on Thursday afternoon.
uOtawa lost their first contest to the powerful Simon Fraser Clan 50-29 on Tuesday. The Clan proved to be the cream of the crop at the eight team tournament defeating Concordia in the championship final.
With the loss the Gee-Gees continued play in the consolation round where they faced the Carleton Ravens in Game 2. Carleton edged the Gee-Gees 59-53 which set up a New Year’s Eve matchup against Queen’s.
After a fairly close opening half that ended 26-24 in the Gaels favour the Gee-Gees roared back with a vengeance in the last half of play outscoring their opposition from Kingston 40-23.
The three game tournament gave Gee-Gees head coach Andy Sparks an excellent opportunity to evaluate his players and see how they would respond in various situations against some of the best women’s basketbal teams in the country.
« We were definitely competitive all tournament long, »Sparks admitted. « We played well against in the first half against a very strong Simon Fraser team, had some moments against Carleton and played better versus Queen’s.
« In my opinion we were in the better pool. We will use the experience move forward and start preparing for our next regular season game. »
The Gee-Gees return to OUA action on January 8, 2010 when they host York. Game time is 6 pm at Montpetit Hall.
