Gee-Gees basketball programs represented at Pan Am Games

Friday October 21, 2011

Gee-Gees basketball players Warren Ward (London, Ont.) and Kellie Ring (Ottawa, Ont.) will be spending part of their CIS preseason out of the country. The two are playing at the 16th Pan Am Games, which are currently taking place from October 14-30 in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Ring is no stranger to international women’s basketball, having most recently represented Canada on the Junior Women’s National Team that finished fifth at the 2011 FIBA U19 World Championships. Ring has also played for Canada’s U17 and U18 teams.

Ward also gained some valuable international experience of his own, representing Canada for his first time this past summer at the 2011 FISU Summer Universiade in Schenzhen, China. He won a silver medal with Team Canada, and was one of team’s leading scorers throughout the tournament.

However this time around, Ward knows that the level of competition will be far more superior to that of the FISU games. “A lot of them will be grown men, and professional basketball players so it’s going to be tough,” he explains. “But I’m looking forward to the challenge, and I think this will be another positive experience for me in getting ready for the upcoming CIS season.”

Canada’s women will get things started with their first preliminary round game against Brazil on October 21, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. local time, followed by Colombia on October 22 at 1:00 p.m., and then Jamaica on October 23 at 5:30 p.m. The women’s gold medal game is scheduled for October 25, at 8:00 p.m.

As for the men, they will open up against World No. 3 FIBA ranked Argentina on October 26, at 10:30 a.m. local time, then Mexico on October 27, at 5:30 p.m., and finally Puerto Rico on October 28, at 10:30 a.m. The men’s gold medal game is set for the last day of competition on October 30, at 1:00 p.m.
