The uOttawa Gee-Gees women’s basketball team is 2-0 after its 71-60 win against the Laurentian Voyageurs on Friday night.
uOttawa was aggressive defensively in the first half, forcing Laurentian into seven turnovers, and dominated with 20 rebounds. A high scoring first quarter ending in uOttawa ahead by six points at 22-16. In the second quarter Laurentian pushed back matching pace with uOttawa, coming within three points of the lead.
In the third quarter Laurentian tied the game at 43 points. uOttawa responded to grow their lead with a seven-point run, as veteran guard Julia Soriano scored from distance followed immediately by a steal in the Laurentian end. Consecutive Laurentian fouls gave uOttawa six points from the free throw line. Strong shooting by third-year guard Danielle Marion stretched the lead to eleven points, ultimately securing the win.
It was a team effort in scoring tonight for uOttawa, leading in scoring was veteran guard Sarah Besselink with 14 points, third-year guard Danielle Marion with 15 points, and second-year guard Brooklynn McAlear-Fanus with 9 points. uOttawa stood with an impressive 61 rebounds at the final whistle.
