HEADLINE: Close one for the Gee-Gees, but the Ravens fly home with the win
The battle was won in the dying seconds of the game between the Ravens and the Gee-Gees Tuesday night, to open the 2008-09 OUA regular season, but Carleton went home with a 52-50 victory.
A three-point tying shot by fourth-year guard Allison Forbes ten seconds before the final buzzer almost changed the course of the game, but the Ravens quickly replied with only two seconds left to play.
The Ravens took the lead early in the game, with a 30-20 lead at half-time. However, the Gee-Gees outscored their local rivals 20-11 in the last quarter. Third-year guard Melina Wishart lead the team with 21 points, while Hannah Sunley-Paisley, a fourth-year centre, got 14 rebounds for the Gee-Gees.
“The key was to go back to fundamentals and start hitting the three pointers”, said Wishart about the changes that occurred at half-time.
“We forced them to do a lot of different things”, said Raven’s head-coach Taffe Charles.
Second-year forward Ashleigh Cleary lead the Ravens with 14 points and eight rebounds.
“I don't know what we learned from that game”, said first-year Gee-Gees head-coach Andy Sparks, which returned 11 players. “We learned that you work your butt off to get a tie but then you don’t finish it.”
The Gee-Gees (0-1) visit Western Ontario (0-0) Friday and Windsor (0-0) Saturday
