The Gee-Gees women’s basketball preseason came to a close on Saturday with a tough 68-67 loss against UQAM. The very physical UQAM squad pressured uOttawa’s defence all night, and the teams were within a 10-point reach for the first three quarters.
“The reality is the good results don’t come without the right kind of execution, effort and mental focus. I don’t think we showed that down the stretch in this one,” said Gee-Gees head coach Andy Sparks.
uOttawa kept pace and turned on the jets in the fourth quarter tying the game with six minutes left to play. Julia Soranio dropped a key three-pointer that took the team into the lead. First-year guard Aliisa Heiskanen subbed in for the team in the second half. “She did a fantastic job, she was a major part of why that game turned around,” said Sparks. The Gee-Gees tightened their defence, but were unlucky with a pair of calls with virtually no time left on the clock, allowing UQAM to take back the lead.
“It comes back to execution, just being confident on the floor and doing what we know we can do,” said fourth-year guard, Kellie Forand.
The team will continue to work on execution and improving their free throw percentage. uOttawa has a two week break before hitting the road for the regular season opener against Algoma University on November 19, at 6 p.m.
