The no. 1 ranked Gee-Gees men’s basketball team showed its mettle in the final minutes of a tight game with the Western Mustangs, locking down a 90-82 win in London, Ont. on Friday evening. The unranked Mustangs (8-4) had the Gee-Gees on the ropes with the score standing at 79-79 and 3:26 to play.

Caleb Agada, who led Ottawa on the night with 21 points, teamed with Vikas Gill, 17 points, to go 4-4 down the stretch from the free throw line and a Johnny Berhanemeskel three-pointer put Ottawa ahead for good. Agada added a corner three with a minute left in the game to allow breathing room and the Gee-Gee defence prevented any clean looks for the Mustangs, allowing just three points after that tie score.

Western’s Greg Morrow posted a season-high 41 points in the upset bid, shooting 15-20 from the field and 10-14 from the free throw line. Morrow, who now ranks fourth in CIS scoring with 22.2 points per game, also picked up nine rebounds in the contest.

Ottawa led 42-38 at halftime but never trailed in the game. Still, Western remained within striking distance throughout the second half. The third quarter was a nearly a deadlock with Western outscoring Ottawa 22-21.

The Mustangs kept the heat on in the second half with 66 per cent shooting, led by Morrow’s remarkable 31-point second half effort. Ottawa double-teamed the fourth-year forward in the final minutes, preventing him from bringing his team all the way over the top.
