There were 84 varsity and 133 competitive club student-athletes who attained the prestigious rank of Academic All-Canadian while representing the Gee-Gees in the 2015-16 academic year. On Tuesday night at uOttawa’s Desmarais Building, overlooking the Rideau Canal and Canada’s Parliament Hill, Sports Services hosted an evening to recognize their accomplishments.
Donald Martin, manager of counselling and coaching services at the Student Academic Success Service, addressed the group to highlight the impact that student-athletes have on the campus.
During the event, three student-athletes were recognized for achieving the highest GPA – a perfect 10.0. Clara Phillips of the cross country team achieved that in biomedical engineering, while Sawyer Bonin of the rowing team and Anna Blinder from women’s ultimate attained it in biomedical sciences.
Overall, the three teams represented by the top student-athletes were the most prolific in terms of boasting Academic All-Canadians. The track and field team included 24 members on the list, while rowing and women’s ultimate had 18 and 12, respectively. Additionally, the men’s football team had 11 members and the men’s ultimate team had 12.
All of the Academic All-Canadians received official certificates and will be recognized with a plaque in Montpetit Hall.
