It was a party atmosphere at the University of Ottawa when more than 250 Canadian Olympians, Paralympians and coaches visited campus on November 2. Joining the fun and games were Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities Carla Qualtrough, uOttawa president Jacques Frémont and some 370 local students in grades 3 to 6.
While commemorating the success of the Team Canada athletes at the Rio Games was the official reason for the visit hosted by the federal government, giving youth the chance to speak and play with the athletes was very much the heart and soul of the gathering.
Qualtrough herself is both an alumna of the University and a three-time medallist (swimming) at the Seoul and Barcelona Paralympics.
The celebration began with a morning kick-off at University Square and was followed by organized sporting activities for the athletes and youth in Montpetit Hall.
The Team Canada visitors were recognized for their accomplishments on Parliament Hill later in the afternoon.
