SWIMMING

@ the OUA Championships at Brock University on February 4-7, 2010.

Sunday, February 7, 2010:

The Gee-Gees exited the OUA championships with a bang Sunday afternoon, with both the men and women setting new uOttawa varsity records in the final event, the 4x100m freestyle relay.

The women’s team, comprised of Kara Demers (Port Colborne, Ont.), Zoe Kamenz (Spencerville, Ont.), Nicole Tudor (Windsor, Ont.) and Sarah Boyd (Ottawa, Ont.) captured a bronze medal, finishing an astonishing 11 seconds faster than their seed time and more than two seconds faster than the previous uOttawa record.

The men’s team snagged a silver medal, with members Adam Tudor (Windsor, Ont.), Hans Fracke (Uxbridge, Ont.), Adam Best (Ottawa, Ont.) and Sean Dawson (Ottawa, Ont.) also setting a new uOttawa record with their 3:27.47 finish.

Other highlights of this final day of racing include Zoe Kamenz qualifying for the CIS Championships in her sixth place finish in the 50m freestyle and 50m breaststroke.  Irvine had another excellent day of swimming, finishing third in the 200m butterfly and fourth in the 400m individual medley.

Best upped his previous uOttawa record in his third place finish in the 200m backstroke, followed closely in the same race by Fracke in fifth and Peter Kwok-Yan Suen (Hong Kong, Ont.) finishing in sixth.

Head Coach Derrick Schoof said in response to the weekend’s swimming, “I am happy with our results, but we still have a way to go.  Swimming in the OUA is getting better every year and the other OUA schools are really improving also.”

The Gee-Gees added three more individual CIS qualifies with Dawson, Zoe Kamenz and Rachael Shallhorn (Oshawa, Ont.) and set nine new uOttawa varsity records.  In the team rankings, the Gee-Gees finished in fourth, with the men coming in third and the women in fifth overall.

Schoof stated that this overall finish as quite a feat for the team, especially considering that “many of our top swimmers did not shave for this weekend but will be for CIS Championships in order to go faster there.”

Next for the Gee-Gees, eleven members of the team head to the Canadian Interuniversity Championships over reading week, competing from February 18-20 at the University of Toronto.
