Swimming

@ Brock for OUA Championships, February 4 to 7, 2010

*Last year, Ottawa placed fourth overall at the OUA Championships, which they hosted, with the men’s team coming in third and the women’s team in sixth.

*The Gee-Gees top finishes came in a pair of second places from Robert Irvine (Whitby, Ont.) in the 400m freestyle and Peter Kwok-Yan Suen (Hong Kong, China) in the 50m butterfly.

*Head coach Derrick Schoof identifies this as “the most fun part of the year. [The swimmers] start to feel more energy and get more excited about the swims that are coming up.”

*The entire uOttawa team is competing at OUAs, including 10 women and 12 men. Each swimmer will compete in a maximum of four individual races and potentially two relays.

*This will be the last opportunity for swimmers to qualify for Canadian Interuniversity Championships and join Gee-Gees Hans Fracke (Uxbridge, Ont.), Adam Best (Ottawa, Ont.), Ivrine, Suen, Bernard Joosten (Uxbridge, Ont.), and Kara Demers (Port Colborne, Ont.) who have already attained qualifying times.

*Schoof says “We look like we’re ready to go fast. [The swimmers] have prepared well. The work is done. Now it’s just a matter getting ready, letting them recover, let them rest and get their energy levels back up.  [They are] getting themselves mentally focused and prepared.”
