GAMESTORY:
Although the Gee-Gees were not able to take a win from the No. 6 nationally ranked McGill Redmen on home ice Saturday night, they did play a competitive game and were able to hold the Redmen to four goals in the battle.
This game also was also the last of the alumni game series, with the team honouring Gee-Gees hockey alumni from the 1990’s and 2000’s before the start of the game.
The Redmen came out strong, scoring the first two goals of the game. First-year forward Tavis Holden (New Liskeard, Ont.) was able to capitalize on a power play in the second period to put the Gee-Gees on the score board. However, the Redmen continued to challenge the Gee-Gees, scoring two more goals before the game’s end, to win 4-1.
The Redmen outshot the Gee-Gees 43-19.
In net for the Gee-Gees was third-year goaltender Riley Whitlock (Calgary, Alta.) and for the Redmen was second-year goaltender Danny Mireault (Notre Dame Des Prairies, Qué.)
“This game saw a young Gee-Gees team play an experienced McGill team,” said head coach Dave Leger. “It’s a valuable experience that you only hope, down the road, will help us.”
Third-year right wing Corey Thibaudeau (Ottawa, Ont.) summed up his thoughts on the game in very few words: “Happy with how we played, not so much with the outcomes.” He explained that the team wanted to go out and compete today, and they did. “They’re [McGill] a good team,” he added.
The Gee-Gees face their final three games of the regular season this week, hosting Carleton (14-9 OUA) Tuesday, February 9, 7:00 p.m. at the uOttawa Sports Complex (SSN Canada), then travelling to UQTR (20-3 OUA) on Friday, February 12, 7:15 p.m., and then to McGill (20-5 OUA) on Saturday, February 13, 7:00 p.m.
