Job description: |
All referees are required to apply and enforce the rules established for their sport to the best of their abilities. Head referees are charged with managing and supervising all referees and ensuring that a high level of officiating is maintained. They are responsible for hiring and scheduling referees. They must also verify all game sheets, settle any disputes that arise and sit on their sport’s discipline committee. Additionally, they are tasked with ensuring that all politics and league procedures are followed as per Intramural Program policy. Head Referees will report to the Intramural Programs’ Coordinator and Assistant Coordinator and work in conjunction with League Supervisors.
Experience / skills required:

Superb organizational and people skills;

Leadership and ability to work as part of a dynamic team;

Good language competency (oral, written and comprehension) in both English and French;
- Significant experience working as referee (>4 years);
- Experience in a supervisory and or in a customer service roll;
- Recognized Referee Certification.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
Before the Season:
- Organize a meeting at the beginning of each term to review rules and general guidelines for the leagues.
- Hire certified referees for the sport in question.
- Ensure all referees are given sweaters. The head referee must also ensure that these sweaters are returned at the end of the season.
- Gather pertinent information from referees, including direct deposit slips and proof of certification.
- Attend the team captains’ and referees’ meetings.
- Create referee schedules.
- Attend all mandatory meetings and information sessions .
During the Season:
- Remain updated on all current rules and procedures for the sport and the leagues.
- Ensure league rules and procedures are followed fairly by all participants and employees.
- Find replacements, or replace referees that are unable to attend games.
- Lead by example when refereeing games.
- Verify all score sheets for the respective sport.
- Assign suspensions to participants if necessary.
- Perform periodic evaluations of all referees and provide feedback.
- Submit referees’ hours to the Assistant Coordinator to ensure payment.
- Be in contact with League Supervisors to ensure the league runs smoothly.
- In the event of a major incident, the Head Referee must collect all relevant documents and data and meet with the disciplinary committee.
- Inform team captains and the League Supervisor of any decision made regarding a league incident.
- Be available to answer questions from participants.
Note: Referees cannot play in a league in which they officiate

All referees are required to be certified by an appropriate governing body in order to apply and enforce the rules established for their sport to the best of their abilities. While officiating, referees must be respectful, courteous and professional. They must ensure that game sheets are properly filled out, and that player identities are accurate. They must provide a fun and safe environment for all Intramural participants. Referees report to their sport’s Head Referee and work in conjunction with the League Supervisor and Locker Rooms Attendants.
Experience / skills required:
- Superb people skills;
- Leadership and ability to work as part of a dynamic team;
- Good language competency (oral, written and comprehension) in both English and French;
- Experience working as referee (>2 years);
- Recognized Referee Certification.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
Before the Season
- Maintain proper certification by an appropriate governing body.
- Know and understand all rules specific to the sport, and the league.
- Provide availability to the Head Referee in a timely manner.
- Attend meetings scheduled by the Head Referee.
- Attend all mandatory meetings and training sessions..
During the Season
- Attend all games assigned by the Head Referee.
- In the event a game cannot be attended, find a replacement or give the Head Referee sufficient notice.
- Notify the Head Referee of all shift changes.
- For activities at the sports field and in the Montpetit gyms: Verify identity of all players on the game sheet.
- Ensure games start and end on time.
- Referee fair and consistent games.
- Maintain a positive attitude around participants and peers.
- Complete appropriate incident/accident reports if necessary.
- Provide truthful and detailed reports if asked by the Head Referee or Disciplinary Committee.
- Stay and officiate a friendly match in the event of a forfeit, as long as the minimum number of participants is present.
- Remain professional at all times.
- Report major incidents/accidents to the League Supervisor.
Note: Referees cannot play in a league in which they officiate

| Job description: |
Intramural League Supervisors are the Intramural Program’s representatives during games. They must promote communication between Intramural Programs’ administration staff and Program participants. They are in charge of managing the leagues and ensuring they run smoothly throughout the season. This includes taking out and putting away all necessary equipment, preparing game sheets, completing incident/accident reports and being available to answer questions from participants. They must know the rules and regulations of their sport and the facilities and apply them whenever disputes may arise. They will also post all scores and standings and notify affected parties when there are changes to the schedule. They must administer first-aid if necessary. They will also assist during the Intramural Program registration week. They will promote a safe and fun environment for all participants. The League Supervisors report to the Intramural Programs’ Coordinator and Assistant Coordinator.

Before the Season

- Assist with the pre-season registration session.
- Register teams for the appropriate leagues.
- Assist in organizing team t-shirts or jerseys.
- Attend the captain’s meeting once all teams are registered.
During the Season
Before Games:
- Know the rules and regulations of the league and the facility, and relay them to employees and participants.
- Print out weekly standings, suspensions, updated team lists and fill out game sheets.
- Contact team captains for all meetings and schedule changes.
- Remain in contact with the Head Referee and the Intramural Programs’ administration staff.
- For hockey and activities at the sports field: Pick up keys for the equipment lockers.
- Retrieve two-way radios and first-aid kits.
- Retrieve and set up necessary equipment.
- Ensure referees have the necessary supplies and equipment. If they do not, provide the needed equipment.
During Games:
- Attend all scheduled games for his/her sport.
- Take attendance for each team.
- Keep score and keep track of penalties during each game, on the game sheet. For hockey, the scores and penalties will be posted on the electronic scoreboard.
- Administer first aid if required.
- Liaise with facility staff when problems occur.
- Assist in settling disputes.
- Fill out incident and/or accident reports when necessary.
- For hockey: Maintain contact with your locker room attendant.
- Make yourself available to answer any questions from participants in your league.
- Ensure captains sign the game sheet after every game.
- Distribute prizes.
After Games:
- For activities at the sports field, and the Montpetit gyms: Gather game sheets from referees at the end of every game.
- Fax all game sheets as well as any incident or accident reports.
- Put away all equipment.
- Perform an inventory check.
- Fill the first-aid kit if necessary.
- Post team scores and standings on the Internet.
- Report any equipment malfunctions.
- Advise the administrative staff of referees that do not show up for shifts.
- For hockey and activities at the sports field: Return all keys.
Other:
- Get to know as many participants as possible.
- Meet once a week / biweekly (if necessary) with other supervisors and the Assistant Coordinator to discuss league issues.
- Meet with team captains on a weekly basis.
- Distribute playoff schedules.
- For hockey: Perform a staff evaluation of the locker room attendant.
- Complete a year-end report including recommendations

Prerequisites for all aquatic positions at the University of Ottawa:
- Current NLS
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR C
- Automatic external defibrillation
- Red Cross water safety instructor or Lifesaving swim instructor
- Oxygen-management therapy
Those wishing to apply for a head lifeguard position must complete the Aquatic supervisor training certification program.
To qualify for an interview, you must successfully complete a water screening test on September 12, at 2 p.m.
